This Post Was Written by a Robot

Well, sort of.

I asked an AI-powered platform to write a post about the best AI-powered writers, which is very meta. You can read the entry after the jump. But first, a few things I discovered while researching, trying and (in some cases) accidentally paying for some of these platforms.

  1. You can’t just push a button for content. While most of these companies tell you that you will be able to “create high-quality content, in just a few seconds”, it takes significantly more time and effort than that. I found that most of these help you structure your thinking and prompt you to think about your stuff through prompts, then spit out oftentimes irrelevant content. But they made you do the job.
  2. Not for niche goods or services. An AI writing platform might be perfect if you’re selling, say, protein powder or design services. Any of the latest “hot” products or services trending in the marketplace. The templates and writing prompts cover all those use cases. If, however, you’re trying to generate content for something more niche (an Eastern-European church event? Fox-tagging services? super-specialized acme widget?), most of these platforms just spit out garbage.
  3. The information is often inaccurate. Sure, sometimes the robot (fine, algorithm, whatever…) pulls in content from sources it has indexed prior to this. And sometimes this content comes from a trusted source and sometimes it’s even accurate. And most importantly, it sounds correct. But more often than not, it’s wildly off. So do yourself a favor and check the info before actually publishing it. Definitely check names, dates, numbers: never has any one of these little apps given me the correct data when it comes to these.

And now, the Jasper-generated content (spoiler: the robot didn’t even recommend itself as the best AI-writing platform):
